Conservation and Recording of Cultural and Architectural Heritage of Ankara İstiklal Neighborhood through New Communication Technologies

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Project Summary

The traditional buildings in Ankara İstiklal Neighborhood, which keeps an important heritage with its historical contexture and multicultural structure and is located in the region declared as a protected area by the High Council for the Conservation of Cultural Property, are in danger of disappearing. The general framework of the project consists of recording the information and archive materials to be obtained about this cultural heritage, transferring them to future generations through internet-based digital technologies, and ensuring the visibility of the historical, cultural and architectural importance of the region in the new media environment by conducting various cultural studies.

In this direction, the aim of the project is to record the architectural structures of Ankara İstiklal Neighborhood, which have cultural and historical importance in the region, with 360-degree imaging technology, and to make the historical, cultural and architectural features of the neighborhood visible on the internet at local and global level.

In this context, 360-degree photographs and videos of the streets on the determined routes, architectural works of historical importance such as baths, religious buildings, residences, fountains, and squares were taken. With this study, which constitutes a sub-project of the "Ankara İstiklal Neighborhood Conservation, Preservation and Creation of Common Cultural Memory Project" funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ankara; audio-visual content has been produced for use in online digital exhibitions, web and virtual reality platforms.

Field Study

Studies carried out within the scope of the Project:

•Research and field trips were conducted in the neighborhood before the shooting,
•Within the scope of the project, on three different routes determined in Ankara İstiklal Neighborhood
– 360 degree photographs were taken,
– Video and photographs of the structures as stated, were taken,
–Architectural works were shot in detail,
–Ambient sound recordings were taken.
• In order to hide the faces and vehicle registration plates of the people, the footage was "anonymized",
• Archival photographs in DIA format were digitalized, ameliorated in the digital environment and color correction was made.
